Plastic is a very versatile material, it can come in any colour, can be shaped in any way and to various strengths. The material’s greatest positives are it that it is light weight, malleable, waterproof and electric shock proof; however, a big problem with this material is that it is not environmentally friendly as it cannot biodegrade.

Steal can be used to support and carry weight, and so is mainly used for structural purposes. A common steal used within interior design is stainless steal, due to its smart, attractive, shiny surface. This material can also look warm and interesting too, with different decorative versions available. However, it can be a costly material to use, and unfortunately has a larger carbon footprint than wood as it requires more energy to produce and be customised.

Wood can be different in colour and softness, each type having its own pros and cons. A shiny, polished wooden surface can be very aesthetically pleasing and looks more traditional than its plastic counterpart. Certain species of tree produce durable wood which can last thirty years provided it is are cared for properly; so if you are thinking of getting replacement windows but don’t find the uPVC option pleasing to the eye, timber windows may be a better option for you. For the exterior of your house wood can be used for garden furniture and decorations such as roof lanterns, and the use of timber looks natural within a garden setting. However, good care of the wood is essential, as it can be weathered and become victim to parasites such as woodworm.

Whatever combination of materials you choose for your interior or exterior design, make sure you have the right materials for your taste and budget, and speak to an advisor first if you are unsure of anything. Get some advice on how to maintain and care for the materials you use, so that your new features and furnishings remain attractive and look as good as new for as long as possible.
