How to Problem Solve Using a Mindmap

http://clk.bz/problem-solve

Problem solving is not always easy. Implementing a mindmap can help to make the process easier and more efficient. Suppose the problem you are trying to solve is finding a venue for a wedding shower. There are four concepts including defining the problem, analysis of the problem, finding the solution and how to put the plan into action allows you to make decisions that are concise. Using a mindmap to answer questions and find solutions to this problem will make the process go much more smoothly.

Defining the Problem

The first step in the problem solving process is to define the problem. Use the mindmap to ask yourself questions to form a definition of the problem that you are trying to solve. Title the main branch “Definition” and ask yourself questions on the sub-branches. Include on the subcategories, “what is the problem? What do I hope to achieve? And, how much do I want to achieve.” All of these questions will help you to define the problem that is in front of you. The mind map will provide a visual of the questions and remind you of the problem you are trying to solve. In the attached example the word “definition” is written on the main branch and the questions are on the “child branches.”

Analysis of the Problem

Once you have defined the problem you must now analyze it. Use the mindmap for this process by developing criteria, considering many solutions and asking yourself why it is a problem. The sub-branches can be used to make notations of what criteria the problem fits under and what different types of solutions you may come up with. The mindmap can also be used for determining why what is being discussed is a problem. Focusing on the analysis of the problem on a mindmap allows you to figure out the answers to questions all in one place that is simple and concise. If you are mapping out the problem of finding a venue for a wedding shower you could write the word “analysis” on the main branch and “Consider solutions and figure out why it is a problem” on the “child branches.” The succeeding branches can help you to further analyze the problem to begin to find a solution. The  mindmap attached has extended branches that investigate the problem in more detail.

Finding a Solution

Now that you have defined the problem and analyzed it you must find a solution for the problem. First it is important to consider all of the possibilities that you have come up with during your analysis. On the mindmap record the options and analyze the solutions to decide which may be best. Finally, decide on a solution and make note of which you have chosen. A mindmap is useful when finding a solution because it takes all of the hard work out of the decision. You can see all of the possibilities laid out in front of you on the map and you can therefore, make your decision based on the visualization. To find the solution to the problem of a venue you can write the considerations and analysis of the solutions as well as the solution you have decided on onto the branches and fill in the “child branches” with your thoughts and ideas for solutions as you think of them.

Putting the Solution into Action

The final step is to put your solution into action. On the mindmap label the main branch “action” and complete the sub-branches with titles that include; planning your next step, planning for the future and making your plans a reality. If you can see the process of putting your solution into action you have the potential of being more motivated to make it happen. A mindmap is a tool that can push you to act on the decisions that you have made when solving a problem.

The attached mindmap gives you an example of using a mindmap to problem solve. The example details the problem of having to find a venue for a wedding shower but the title and information can be interchanged to suit your needs.
